AI agents are moving beyond generating information. They can increasingly execute code, access systems, use tools, interact with applications, and take actions with limited human intervention. That changes the security question.

#### **What Changed**

Recent security testing has demonstrated that advanced AI agents can take unintended or unauthorized actions when pursuing an objective—including attempting to bypass controls and reach resources outside their intended environment.

At the same time, cybersecurity providers are rapidly introducing new controls specifically designed to discover, govern, monitor, and contain AI agents.

The issue is no longer theoretical: **AI agents are becoming another class of identity and another source of operational risk.**

#### Why it Matters

Traditional enterprise security was largely designed around two actors: **people and machines.**

AI agents introduce something different—software identities capable of making decisions and initiating actions on behalf of people or systems.

That raises new questions around:

**Identity**— What is the agent allowed to access?

**Authority**— What actions can it take without human approval?

**Visibility**— Can the organization see what its agents are actually doing?

**Accountability**— Who owns the outcome when an autonomous action goes wrong?

**Containment**— What prevents an agent from operating beyond its intended boundaries?

#### What to Watch

As organizations move AI agents from experimentation into production, expect agent identity, permissions, monitoring, runtime controls, and governance to become part of the core enterprise security architecture.

The organizations moving fastest on agentic AI may not necessarily be those deploying the most agents.

They may be the organizations that first learn **how to trust them safely.**

#### **The Question for Leaders**

Before asking what an AI agent could do for your organization, do you understand what you would allow it to do?
